Sister Beatrice looks up at me with worried eyes. The baby swaddled in her arms shifts and gurgles, so she readjusts and bounces it softly on the other hip, never breaking her gaze. Her dark eyes are steady but soft. She has not been here long. As one of the few girls of color in our order, she is more cautious than other Sisters to tread lightly and stay on top of her duties. I am by no means as new as she, I have earned my keep and respect among the Sisters of the house, but compared to a lot of the others, I am young and still scrutinized. I blink away from her stare- it is curious, but carries an intensity I am not used to. What had she asked me? Oh, that’s right. The incident. “-Despite that, Sister, the numbers were sufficient enough to meet our quota.” A girl burnt a dress today, one of an important parishioner. The family is very generous with their donations to the church, and the item was not common. There may be repercussions for us, however we will only know after Sister Agnes meets with Father Clarence later this week.
